Macau — Sands, a global leader in integrated gaming resort development and operations, won praise today for its new commitment to source 100% cage-free eggs across its global supply chain by 2028.
Sands operates five resorts in Macau and one in Singapore, properties which include nearly 15,000 rooms and suites, over 200 restaurants, numerous banquet and event spaces, concert venues, and several of the largest convention centers in Asia. The company’s properties include The Venetian Macao, the second-largest hotel and casino in the world, and Marina Bay Sands resort in Singapore, the most expensive hotel and casino ever built.
"We are committed to sourcing 100% cage-free eggs by 2028 globally," announced the company, which also posted its new pledge on X (formerly Twitter) yesterday.
"Sands' excellent commitment to source only cage-free eggs across its F&B operations is a win for its guests and for sustainability, and it will pave the way for other gaming and hospitality companies to do the same," commented Lily Tse, Sustainability Program Director at international NGO Lever Foundation, which worked with Sands on its commitment. "Shifting to cage-free eggs significantly improves animal welfare and provides safer and higher quality food for customers. Sands’ great pledge on this issue is part of a broader trend of increased sustainability in the hotel and gaming industry across Asia."
Cage-free egg production, in which hens are given the freedom to move in open indoor environments, improves animal welfare and significantly lowers food safety risks compared to caged egg production. Exhaustive research by the European Food Safety Authority found conventional battery cage egg farms have up to 25 times higher rates of contamination by key salmonella strains, leading the EFSA to issue a recommendation for a complete ban on caged egg production across Europe. The best way for individual consumers to protect egg-laying hens is to reduce or eliminate egg consumption.
