Thirty-eight-year-old David Leyland from West Derby has been crowned the winner of the sixth leg of the Genting Poker Series, which took place at Genting Casino Queen Square.
Following a £225 buy in, David battled through four days of fierce competition to walk away with £14,060 in prize money and a seat at one of the Genting Poker Series Main Events.
Queen Square is a popular venue on the Genting Poker Series circuit and 319 people from all over the country entered the competition.
On the last day of the competition the tournament was whittled down to nine competitors who made up the final table and David finished victorious.
Speaking after the event, David said: “I’m absolutely delighted to have won the poker series, Queen Square is my local casino. I travel all over the country to play poker and I would say that this is probably one of the best tournaments I’ve played in.
“The event had a really inviting atmosphere; I get on really well with the dealers and card room staff and all the players on the circuit are really friendly.”
The win was a fantastic achievement for the father of one who began playing poker with a group of friends before deciding to enter a pub league.
“I started of playing poker socially with a group of friends. We would play at each other’s houses in the evenings. Then I began playing poker in the local pub league, which is something I now run.
I then decided to start going to casinos to play and now I’m a huge fan and have even set up my own Facebook poker page, Pokermasters UK.”
David, who’s girlfriend is also a poker player, plans on spending his winnings on revamping his garden and taking his son and fiancée away on holiday.
He explains, “I’m planning on taking my little boy and fiancée off to London for a few days. I’ve been planning on doing some work on my garden as well, so I will be spending some of the winnings on that.
“I spend time travelling up and down the country attending poker events, so I will invest some of the money back into playing more events.”
The Mini event at Genting Casino Queen Square was the sixth of 17 Mini and Main events that are taking place all over the country in 2019. The tournaments are open to players of all abilities and no qualification is required. At each of the Mini events the players will be competing for a minimum prize pot of £35,000.
