Inside the Modern Casino Industry: Jonathan Leggett on Where Growth and Responsibility Intersect

The casino business has never been stagnant. The games are classic, but the way they’re being played is always evolving. New markets open, technology changes, and players move between platforms faster than ever before. . Yet the core tension remains the same: growth brings opportunity, but it also brings responsibility.

We caught up with OnlineCasino.ca content editor Jonathan Leggett to talk about the modern casino landscape, where the money is moving, and why the smartest operators are thinking about transparency just as much as expansion.

Global Casino Growth Is Structural, Not Cyclical

Q: The casino industry seems to be expanding at a rapid rate. What are you seeing from the inside?

Jonathan Leggett:
“Look, casinos have always grown where people want to play. That part hasn’t changed. What’s changed is the scale. The global casino market reached over $310 billion in 2024, and projections show it can reach way north of half a trillion dollars by 2033.

“When you’re talking about big numbers like that, operators stop thinking in short cycles. They’re planning ten, fifteen years ahead. Integrated resorts, online platforms, loyalty ecosystems, and everyone trying to outsmart everyone else. Development, UX, UI… those things are not experiments anymore. They’re infrastructure.

“I’ve been around this industry long enough to remember when the conversation was about whether online gaming would even take off. Now it’s just another layer of the business. Casinos today operate across physical venues and digital platforms at the same time.  Players expect that crossover. Casinos need to come to the party.”

Digital Channels Expand Revenue Base

Q: Speaking of which, digital platforms seem to be reshaping the industry. What impact are they having on operators?

Jonathan Leggett:
“Digital changed the business. No two ways about it. Years ago you walked a casino floor to see what players were doing, scope out the scene and get a feel for the run of the play. These days you open a dashboard and the information is there instantly. You’re not working with ‘energies’ and the vibe of the room anymore. You’re up against an impersonal random number generator. But it’s not all as impersonal as that.

“Industry research shows how online platforms and hybrid models are becoming a major contributor to casino revenue strategies. Operators are now mixing up land-based experiences with digital engagement.

“A player might discover a brand through a mobile platform or visit a resort during a holiday to Vegas or Macau, or wherever, and then keep playing online afterwards. Those touchpoints between brick-and-mortar and  ones-and-zeroes are now connected. Operators track player behavior and their preferences. Also, spending patterns in real time. That level of data simply didn’t exist twenty years ago.”

Responsibility Moves to the Forefront

Q: With growth comes scrutiny. Where do you see the responsibility conversation heading?

Jonathan Leggett:
“The responsibility discussion has become unavoidable. The industry is expanding fast and regulators are keeping up.

“Then, you also have new platforms appearing outside traditional regulatory structures. Crypto casinos generated around eighty billion dollars in gross gaming revenue during 2024 alone, which represents a massive increase from just a few years earlier.

“That tells you something about demand. Players will find platforms that offer access and convenience. Licensed operators know that competing on scale alone is not enough. You need credibility. Clear terms, visible safeguards, proper licensing, the works. Otherwise players start looking elsewhere.”

Content, Transparency and Player Trust

Q: Players now have thousands of online casinos to choose from. Where do information platforms fit into that ecosystem?

Jonathan Leggett:
“They’ve become essential. The average player doesn’t have time to analyze licensing details or compare dozens of payment policies before choosing a casino. They’re here to play, not read the fine print. That’s where structured information is worth its weight in gold.

“You see platforms organizing the market in a way that actually helps players understand what they’re signing up for. OnlineCasino.ca breaks down casinos, so players can stop felling their way around in the dark and make an actual informed choice.

“And, bottom line, that sort of transparency benefits the whole ecosystem. Operators who run fair platforms get visibility, and players get as fairer deal. In an incredibly saturated market, clarity builds trust faster than any marketing slogan ever will.”

Sustainable Growth Requires Alignment

Q: Looking ahead, what will determine whether the casino industry continues to grow responsibly?

Jonathan Leggett:
“It’s a tough question, but has an easy-ish answer. Bottom line, we’re going to see a near doubling of the industry in the next half a decade or so.  That’s enormous growth. But growth only works if the foundations are solid.

“Operators will need strong compliance systems, regulators need clear frameworks, and players need confidence in the platforms they choose. The casino business has always been about entertainment. What’s new is the sheer amount of data behind it.

“When the industry aligns, growth becomes sustainable, and not just an outlier. That’s the direction the serious operators are heading.”
